Daniel Jamezzz and Erick Yung: A Tale of Two Heartbreaks

Santa Ana is quickly becoming a well-known hub for all things art and music in Orange County, with Downtown Santa Ana being the heart of all the action. And what makes us so special are the collaborations that come from such a close-knit community. One, in particular, has grown a massive following among locals.

Meet Daniel Jamezzz and Erick Yung; two longtime friends who are both seasoned contributors to the growing music scene in downtown. In 2019, this dynamic duo created the summer anthem “Mariposa” which marked the beginning of their musical journey together. And just two days ago, Daniel & Erick released their first collaborative album comprised of eight songs (and a whole lot of hype). The album is called “The Experience” which is different for every listener. Whether your body is moved by the intricately detailed production from Daniel, or your heart is swooned by the rich melodies and vulnerable lyrics sung by Erick, this album takes you on a journey of sound waves and heartbreak. But what sticks out the most is the clear collaboration between the two. Their friendship can be heard sonically throughout the entire album, easily identifying their contributions.

Because the two artists come from different backgrounds (Daniel being a producer/DJ and Erick a singer/rapper), the album holds an array of different genres that do a great job of blending harmoniously.  For starters, the beat in  “Wat U Want” has a dance-worthy house tempo carried by a catchy chorus. An easy addition to any pre-game playlist. ”Locura”, on the other hand, is a star on its own with a strong resemblance of the early 2000’s club scene with today’s modern Latin sound. However, there are vulnerable parts to this album, too. Songs like “Numb” & “Disguise” tell the story of those who put up a wall to protect themselves after experiencing heartbreak. It’s something we have all been through which makes the album just a little more endearing in comparison to the other tracks.

Which is why I would say “Numb” is the best track of the album because it does a great job of encapsulating the album's overall vision. It narrates what the actual “experience” is; the chase, the love (or lust), the heartbreak, and ultimately the willingness to do it all over again. In addition to Erick’s vulnerable lyrics, Daniel lightens up the mood with an upbeat island tempo that instantly transports the listener to a private beach at sunset, dancing with a tropical drink in hand. But the cherry on top is the intimate confessional at the end of the song which is reminiscent of Jazmine Sullivans prized album “Heaux Tales, Mo’ Tales”. If you’re curious about what Downtown Santa Ana’s music scene is all about, I think this album is a great start. “The Experience” is an example of the many artistic collaborations that blossom in our community with talented artists that transcend small-town expectations.
